A Canadian city has started implementing a new system to enforce traffic discipline in school zones, targeting drivers of sports cars passing through these areas.

It is usually difficult to control sports car drivers because they are constantly motivated to speed and reject the practice of slowing down in residential areas and student crossing zones around schools.

To force them to do so, the administration of the Canadian city of "Brossard" decided to install a new special type of traffic signal, which encourages drivers to reduce their speed when approaching school zones.

The website "Motor1," specializing in car news, says that this new technology was announced by the Canadian city located on the outskirts of the capital Montreal under the name FRED.

This word symbolically means, according to the website, "Fire Educational Red to Ease Traffic," and this type of innovative red signal always stays red at the student crossing area around schools to force speeding cars to stop.

The signal automatically turns green when it senses the approach of cars complying with the maximum allowed speed in school zones, rewarding the driver for adhering to the speed limit in this area.

If the FRED traffic signal senses the approach of a speeding car, it will remain red until it forces the driver to reduce speed and stop completely if necessary; it will only turn green upon reaching the maximum allowed speed in school zones.

This type of smart traffic signal is being used for the first time in North America, although it is widely used in school zones across Europe.

The Canadian city of "Brossard" has put the FRED traffic signal to a 90-day test along a designated route in the city's suburbs.

The "Motor1" site states that before installing the new traffic signal, the average speed of cars on the street where it was tested reached 25 miles per hour, and after its installation, the average maximum speed of cars on this street decreased to 18 miles per hour, achieving the desired goal.
