Whether you are renewing your driver's license or license plate, buying a new or used car, or even applying for a marriage license, you may no longer need to search to find the nearest ServiceOntario location to you.

These and many services are now available online as part of an initiative by the Ontario government to provide better services and make them faster, easier, and more convenient overall for people to access the services they need.

ServiceOntario’s expanded offerings include over 55 services available online.

There is also an optional online renewal reminder service, so you can register to receive emails, text messages, or phone calls when it's time to renew things like your license plate, driver's license, or health card.

Additionally, the Ontario government has created an enhanced appointment booking service to attend in person at a ServiceOntario location for those who need it, and there is also an option to conduct these appointments virtually, depending on the type of appointment you need.

While there are many options available online at ServiceOntario, the government says that its centers will remain open and will still be an option for those who need them.

Here’s a look at all the changes, updates, registrations, and renewals now available online through ServiceOntario:

Drivers and Vehicles:

Perhaps the two things you need most through ServiceOntario are, driving (everything related to obtaining your license and renewing it), and vehicles (everything related to vehicle ownership).

Drivers in Ontario can renew their driver's license or change the address on their driver's license entirely online, and there is also an option to access your driving records and pay outstanding fines online.

Another important online option for drivers is renewing their license plates online, which is free and takes only five minutes, but since Ontario has removed sticker labels from license plates, forgetting to renew your license plate could result in a hefty fine of up to $1,000.

As for drivers, there are still many services that require you to attend in person at a ServiceOntario location, which includes obtaining a driver's license, renewing a driver's license for someone aged 80 or older, replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged driver's license, and exchanging an out-of-province or out-of-country driver’s license.

For vehicles, the latest update from ServiceOntario online makes it easier to buy or sell a new or used car in Ontario at a car dealership.

The new online Digital Dealer Registration (DDR) system in Ontario also allows dealerships to transfer vehicle ownership themselves online.

Other online tools related to vehicles through ServiceOntario include obtaining a customized license plate and a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), as well as accessing vehicle records.

Health Cards, Certificates, and Registrations:

You can renew your Ontario health card online through ServiceOntario and also book a virtual appointment for this service, but if it involves a new photo, you will need to visit a ServiceOntario location in person.

You will also have to go in person if you are applying for OHIP, or getting your first health card in Ontario, or replacing or changing information on your health card.

Other options available online in this category include the option to register as an organ and tissue donor, and you can also complete the registration of a newborn.

Birth, marriage, and death certificates are also available online through ServiceOntario.

As part of a new pilot program, you can also apply for a marriage license entirely online, but only if you live in one of the six participating municipalities, which are:

City of Kenora

Town of Cobourg

City of Kingston

Town of Ingersoll

Town of Uxbridge

City of Timmins

Apart from common services related to driving and vehicles, health cards, and certificates, there are many other online services available for people in Ontario.

For example, ServiceOntario allows you to obtain a fishing license, as well as an Outdoors card online.

Security guards and private investigators in Ontario can also register for their individual licenses online, along with many other options for businesses in this industry to conduct necessary paperwork electronically.

Finally, when it comes to housing and property, you can also register or search for a personal property exemption through ServiceOntario online.
