The UN Security Council will hold an open briefing today, Wednesday, to discuss the situation in Sudan, at the request of the United Kingdom.

It is expected that both the Special Envoy and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan /UNITAMS/, Volker Perthes, and the Director of the Operations and Advocacy Division at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Edem Wosornu, will provide a briefing on the subject.

Perthes is also expected to inform the members about developments regarding ongoing regional and international efforts to resolve the crisis.

Participants are expected to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation, the increasing food insecurity, attacks on civilian infrastructure (including schools and hospitals), and the decline in the health situation in the country.

According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification forecasts, about 20.3 million people, representing more than 42 percent of the country's population, are expected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity between July and September.

Members of the council are also expected to express concern about the internal displacement of civilians and the flow of refugees into neighboring countries of Sudan.
