The Canadian police accused a man of participating and contributing to terrorist activity and belonging to a terrorist organization. Between February 12, 2021, and May 20, 2021, the police say that a person committed "various hate-motivated crimes in the Windsor area."
As a result of the investigation conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) of the RCMP, it was found that a person submitted an online application to join a listed terrorist entity, the "Atomwaffen" division (also known as the National Socialist Order), and offered his services and skills characterized by acting on the demands of this terrorist entity.
The "Atomwaffen" group was founded in the United States in 2013 and was added to the list of terrorist entities in the Canadian Criminal Code in February 2021, exposing individuals affiliated with the group to criminal penalties.
Inspector Cheryl Brunette Smith from the security enforcement team said, "The success of this investigation is directly attributed to the strength of our partnerships between police and intelligence alongside our partners at the Windsor Police Service and OPP PATS [Provincial Anti-Terrorism Section]."
Bertrand Smith, 19 years old, is accused, according to police statements, of "directly or indirectly participating and contributing to activities of a terrorist group and facilitating their operations in carrying out terrorist activities."
Bertrand was previously charged by the Windsor police with assault after vandalizing the "We Trans" community support center on three occasions. He was also arrested following a series of vandalism incidents in the "Walkerville" neighborhood, which victims believe were targeted attacks.
