France confirmed today, Friday, the death of a French citizen and "the detention of another in Algeria in an incident involving a number of French citizens," after Moroccan media reports on Thursday indicated the killing of tourists holding Moroccan and French nationalities by Algerian coast guard fire.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the death of one citizen without clarifying the circumstances of the death.
It stated in a statement that "the Crisis and Support Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs and our embassies in Morocco and Algeria are in close contact with the families of our citizens, to whom we are providing full support."
A spokesperson for the ministry said, "We are in contact with the Moroccan and Algerian authorities. The public prosecution has been notified." The French Foreign Ministry did not specify the identity of the deceased.
