Paramedics in Ottawa reported that a two-year-old girl was taken to CHEO Children's Hospital as a precautionary measure yesterday after she found a syringe in a local park and put it in her mouth.

The Civil Hospital Neighborhood Association posted on Facebook saying that used needles and drug paraphernalia were spotted in the playground structure at Princess Park on Saturday and that a Fairmont child on Margriet Street had touched a needle.

Paramedics in Ottawa said they were called just before 11:30 a.m. after a mother noticed her daughter putting an uncovered syringe in her mouth. According to the paramedics, the mother said other items, including a hair tie and crumpled aluminum foil, were nearby.

The girl was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition; no other details are known at this time.

Last week, Ottawa Police, Ottawa Paramedics, Ottawa Public Health, and the Overdose Prevention and Response Task Team issued an alert about toxic drug supplies in the city. Public health data from Ottawa indicates that at least 22 people in the city died from drug overdoses in January.

Paramedics also warned that needle injuries can spread bloodborne diseases such as hepatitis.

The Civil Hospital Neighborhood Association urged residents to be vigilant and report any discarded needles to the number
