Heavy rains flooded several roads and properties across the city of Ottawa today, Thursday, as a series of severe storms swept through the national capital region.
By 3 PM, Environment Canada reported 71.9 mm of rain fallen at the Ottawa weather station. Some areas experienced 50 to 75 mm of rain between 11:30 AM and 1 PM.
Ottawa police and city officials warned of road closures around the city due to flooding, with temporary road closures on Woodroffe Avenue, Merivale Road, Innes Road, and Meadowlands Drive throughout the afternoon.
Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning, stating that some areas could see up to 125 mm of rain and nickel-sized hail.
The Canadian Weather Agency said: "At 3:11 PM EDT, meteorologists at Environment Canada are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing heavy rainfall." "Heavy rain and intermittent thunderstorms will continue for a few more hours until the weather system weakens."
Ottawa police said on social media: "Road safety warning: Heavy rainfall has caused some road closures. They added: "We continue to monitor and assess the situation. Police are on hand to help."
Meanwhile, the St. Laurent Shopping Centre reported that the basement of GoodLife Fitness and the cinema theater were closed due to flooding. The rest of the mall is open.
The eastern entrance to Parliament Hill was also closed this Thursday afternoon due to water. Videos posted on social media showed rain pouring from the ceiling onto the escalator.
Hydro Ottawa reported several small outages throughout the city this afternoon, including 126 customers in Rideau-Jock and 273 customers in Bay Ward.
Ottawa police closed part of Merivale Road between Colonnade and Woodfield due to flooding.
Friday's forecast indicates a mix of sun and clouds with a high temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, and a humidity level of 28.
