Ontario officials reported more than 1000 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, the lowest number since late December.

Ontario's Health Minister, Christine Elliott, said that 1,003 patients are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Among these patients, 49% were admitted with COVID-19 and 51% were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus while in the hospital.

In the intensive care unit, 297 people with COVID-19 require care - the lowest number of admitted cases since early January.

Ontario's Health Minister, Christine Elliott, added that among the 297 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, 76 percent were admitted because of COVID-19 and 24 percent were admitted for other reasons but have now tested positive for the virus.

In the same context, Ontario health officials reported 39 COVID-19 related deaths on Friday, which occurred in the past thirty days, while four more were added to the total due to the ongoing investigation into excess deaths.

Meanwhile, Ontario reported 2,427 new COVID-19 cases, but health officials warned that the number is lower than reality due to limited testing.

Among the new cases confirmed on Friday, there are 287 unvaccinated cases and 1,391 fully vaccinated. The remaining 248 cases in Ontario are partially vaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown.

With 21,550 tests processed in the last 24 hours, Ontario reported a positive test rate of 9.8 percent.

The majority of infections were identified in the Greater Toronto Area. Officials reported 357 new cases in Toronto, 94 new cases in York region, 130 new cases in Peel region, and 106 new cases in Durham region.

The only other public health units that recorded more than 100 new COVID-19 cases were Kingston-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington with 101 new cases, Northwestern with 11 cases, Ottawa with 131 cases, and Simcoe Muskoka with 134 new cases.

On Thursday, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore said he expects mask mandates to be lifted "simultaneously" across most sectors when it is safe to do so, and not on a staggered basis.
