The Ontario government announced the allocation of about 134 million dollars to purchase five new helicopters to be used by police in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa. This decision came to assist in addressing the phenomenon of car theft and street racing.
The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced regarding the funding, stating that the province originally planned to lease four new helicopters for security purposes to aid security agencies, but chose to buy them instead of leasing, as part of the air support unit, as announced by the provincial government.
The Ontario police will also purchase two new H135 helicopters to support the police in Ottawa and Toronto, in addition to the three remaining helicopters to be purchased for the police services in the Durham region, Halton region, and Peel region. These helicopters will be independently owned and operated by the police services.
Ford stated that this investment sends a strong message to all criminals involved in violent and organized crimes.
