"Ashley Da Silva" from Vaughan wanted to get fully vaccinated but could not for health reasons. She thought her medical exemption would be enough to allow her to board the plane.
Da Silva said, "I received my first dose of the vaccine and had an allergic reaction to it, so I got a medical exemption from my doctor for the second dose."
Da Silva and her boyfriend Liam London, high school sweethearts, had their prom canceled due to the pandemic, so they decided to book a vacation in Mexico.
It is worth mentioning that they paid approximately $4,310 for their Sunwing vacation and appeared at Pearson Airport ready to board the plane.
"There was no problem," Da Silva said, "I have an exemption, I will show it and we will be fine." But Da Silva was told she was not allowed to board the plane.
Martin Firestone, president of Travel Secure Inc., said, "The airline has a form that you take to your doctor and your doctor completes the reasons for your medical exemption, then you submit it to the airline and they need a three-week approval period."
When CTV News Toronto contacted Sunwing, a company spokesperson said, "Regarding vaccination exemptions, we follow only the regulations set by the Canadian Transportation Agency.
Adding, requests are considered on a case-by-case basis, and Sunwing Airlines customers seeking exemption requests for upcoming travel must complete the required form and send the request to our Special Services department three weeks before the departure date."
Explaining that, "Since the exemption process outlined was not followed in this traveler's case, unfortunately, her boarding was denied, and if the traveler wishes to discuss the reason for the boarding denial in more detail, provide feedback on her experience, or express concerns, a request can be submitted online via Sunwingcares.ca and a customer relations representative will contact her directly."
It is worth mentioning that, according to the federal government, 82 percent of Canada's population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, meaning nearly five million Canadians are unable to fly.
On the other hand, federal Conservatives have called on the Liberal government in Ottawa to return to pre-pandemic rules and service levels for travel and lift the vaccination requirement for travelers.
On the other hand, a political official said, "It seems retaliatory, it seems to punish a certain number of Canadians who do not agree with the government."
Adding, in many other countries like the United States, unvaccinated travelers are allowed to travel domestically, such as traveling from New York to Chicago.
Explaining, but in Canada, you are not allowed to travel from Calgary to Toronto unless you are vaccinated or have a medical exemption and a 30-day notice.
