The movie star and lifelong Democrat, George Clooney, added his voice to the calls for Joe Biden to exit the presidential race on Wednesday, just weeks after chairing a record-breaking fundraising campaign overnight for the president's re-election.
Clooney said in an opinion piece published by The New York Times that he loves Biden, but the party will lose the presidential race and any control in Congress with him as the nominee.
Clooney wrote, "This is not just my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator, congress member, and governor I have spoken with privately." He has hosted several high-yield fundraising campaigns in Hollywood, including one for Biden last month.
Clooney stated that the party should choose a new candidate at its convention next month, saying the process would be "messy" but would "wake up voters for the party," pointing to Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Gavin Newsom of California as some of those the country should listen to now.
Clooney focused most of his article on Biden's age, noting the differences he saw in the 81-year-old president during a recent event in Los Angeles compared to past years.
Clooney wrote, "It is devastating to say this, but Joe Biden, whom I was with three weeks ago at a fundraising event, was not Joe Biden of 2010, he wasn't even Joe Biden of 2020, he wasn't even the same man we all saw in the debate."
Last month, Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Barbra Streisand were among those who took the stage at a fundraising campaign that raised a record $30 million for Biden, hoping to energize potential supporters for a White House contest that they said might rank as one of the most important in U.S. history.
High-profile figures in the entertainment world have increasingly lined up to assist Biden's campaign. Before the fundraiser, Clooney's name appeared in several fundraising messages for the campaign, which it dubbed "the battle of our lives."
Clooney did not immediately respond to a message requesting insight into his decision, or when he made it specifically, or when he last spoke with Biden.
Biden has refused to end his re-election bid following his poor performance in the debate against presumed Republican nominee Donald Trump on June 27.
