According to press reports, Niger has issued a decision to stop gold and uranium exports to France, which is considered a major supplier of uranium used in electricity production.
This decision, issued by the National Council President Abdrahmane Tiani, will take effect starting next Sunday, at a time when Paris has repeatedly expressed its concerns about what is happening in Niger.
French President Emmanuel Macron also held an emergency security meeting last Saturday to discuss the implications.
Niger supplied the European Union in 2021 with nearly 25 percent of its uranium supplies. About 35 percent of the uranium used in French reactors in 2020 came from Niger.
