Canadian federal officials said that Canada is preparing for a potential evacuation of its citizens from Lebanon, in the event that the war between Israeli occupation forces and Palestinian resistance factions escalates and extends to other parts of the region.
Alexander Lievik, Assistant Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs – told reporters – that diplomatic efforts are aimed at preventing the escalation of the conflict. He added, "This is all in hopes of preventing things from spreading to the rest of the region. But of course, in order to face the unexpected, preparations are ongoing."
Vice Admiral Bob Auchterlony stated that the Canadian Armed Forces have formed a "task force" in Cyprus; to assist in the evacuation process; if requested by Foreign Affairs. He added, "Like-minded allies are gathering in common locations to consider, coordinate, and plan for emergency operations in case the conflict continues or escalates in the region."
However, the government insists that Canadians in Lebanon should consider leaving while other means are available. Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly told Canadians – yesterday – "If you are in Lebanon, it is time to leave while commercial flights are still available."
The government issued a travel advisory – last week – recommending that Canadians avoid non-essential travel to Lebanon. It also warns Canadians to avoid traveling to the southern region of the country.
