The United States of America used its veto against a draft resolution submitted by Brazil to the Security Council calling for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, with 12 countries voting in favor of the text of the resolution, while Russia and Great Britain abstained from voting.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations, said, "The attack on the hospital in Gaza yesterday resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, amid the ineffectiveness of the Security Council. We warned our colleagues that time cannot be wasted now, and it is critically important to defuse tensions on the ground, and a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons will not stop the bloodshed; it is just a ceasefire."

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield said, "Diplomacy must be allowed to succeed. Yes, resolutions are important, and yes, this council must speak - but the actions we take must be based on the facts on the ground and support the efforts of the Security Council. Direct diplomacy can save lives. The council should act, as we are disappointed that the proposed resolution did not mention that Israel has the right to defend itself, and that Hamas is responsible for the situation in the Gaza Strip."

China's Ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, said, "The situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly." The Chinese ambassador referenced the explosion that occurred yesterday at the hospital, stating that "China strongly condemns the airstrikes on hospitals and calls on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law. We call for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians to prevent further harm to civilians."
