A new poll showed that President Joe Biden's popularity declined to its lowest level during his presidency in May, with growing pessimism among members of his Democratic Party.

Only 39% of adults in the United States approve of Biden's performance as president, according to the poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, down from negative ratings a month earlier.

Overall, only 2 out of 10 adults say the United States is on the right track or that the economy is good, both down from about 3 out of 10 a month ago. These declines were concentrated among Democrats, with only 33% within the president’s party saying the country is on the right track, down from 49% in April.

A particular concern for Biden ahead of the midterm elections, his approval among Democrats is 73%, a significant drop from earlier in his presidency. In AP-NORC polls conducted in 2021, Biden's approval among Democrats never dropped below 82%.

The results reflect widespread dissatisfaction in a country facing a series of challenges ranging from inflation, gun violence, and a sudden shortage of baby formula to the ongoing pandemic.

“I think the economic breakdown that caused me to be unable to afford living where I grew up is not Biden’s fault,” said Milan Ramsey, a 29-year-old high school counselor and Democrat in Santa Monica, California, who had to move with her husband to her parents’ home to raise their infant son.

Ramsey believes Biden did not deliver any ambitious plans to combat climate change or reform healthcare but is worried about it.

“He didn’t fulfill any of the promises,” Ramsey said of Biden. “I think he’s tired—and I don’t blame him, I’d be tired too at his age from his career.”

Republicans have not been kind to Biden for some time. Fewer than 1 in 10 approve of the president or his handling of the economy, but this is no different than last month.

“His policies are destroying the economy,” said Turanzo, 46, about Biden, blaming him for stopping the Keystone XL fuel pipeline to Canada and blocking local energy production projects. “It’s a vicious cycle of rising prices.”

Overall, two-thirds of Americans disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy. This rating has not changed much in recent months, although it rose slightly in the first two months of the year.

But there is evidence that dissatisfaction with Biden over the economy has deepened significantly.

Only 18% of Americans say Biden’s policies have done more good than harm to the economy.

The percentage of Democrats who said Biden’s policies helped a lot dropped from 45% to 37%, although only 18% said these policies caused a lot of harm; 44% say they made no difference.

Some Democrats blame other forces for inflation.

Manuel Morales, an internet service technician in Moline, Illinois, believes the pandemic and the war in Ukraine had a much bigger impact than Biden’s decisions.

Morales faults Biden in another area of persistent president’s weaknesses: immigration.

Only 38% support Biden on immigration, and Morales is disappointed by seeing migrants continue to cross the southern border. Although he himself is a Mexican immigrant, Morales believes the United States needs to monitor its borders more strictly to have a chance to legalize migrants residing in the country illegally.

“There must be borders,” Morales said. “It’s impossible to bring the entire Central America and Mexico to this country.”

Another area where Morales disagrees with Biden is the war with Ukraine. “We are spending too much money going to Ukraine and all of that will go into the budget deficit,” Morales said.

Overall, 45% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the U.S. relationship with Russia, while 54% disapprove. This has remained steady every month since the war in Ukraine began. Seventy-three percent of Democrats and 15% of Republicans approve.

The new poll shows that only 21% of Americans
