On Monday, Russia banned an additional 43 Canadians from entering its territory, in a ban imposed in response to the sanctions Ottawa imposed against Moscow due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On Monday evening, Canada announced new sanctions on Russia.

The new blacklist published by the Russian Foreign Ministry includes especially Susan Quan, leader of the Canadian Liberal Party to which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau belongs, and Mark Carney, the former governor of the central banks of Canada and England.

The sanctions also included senior officials, political advisors, and members of civil society.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the "aggressive Russophobia" of the Trudeau government and explained that it is a retaliatory measure against Ottawa's imposition in May of "new sanctions on Russian businessmen and their family members."

With the latest list, more than 700 Canadians have been banned from entering Russia since Moscow's attack on Ukraine began.

In Germany, where he is participating in the G7 summit, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that his country had imposed new sanctions on Moscow targeting specifically six Russian individuals and 46 companies in the Russian defense sector.

Trudeau explained in a statement that his government seeks to "confront the misinformation spread by the Kremlin" and to ban the export of advanced technological equipment that Russia could use to manufacture weapons.

On May 19, Moscow announced that it would close the office of the Canadian radio and television station in the Russian capital and cancel the accreditations and visas granted to its journalists in response to the ban on broadcasting Russian "RT" group channels in Canada in mid-March.

Meanwhile, Ottawa imposed sanctions on more than a thousand individuals and entities from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.
