Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that U.S. President Joe Biden invited him for a meeting at the White House this fall.
Netanyahu said during an interview with the American ABC channel that the date is expected to be set for next September. Netanyahu's office had previously stated that the two would meet in the United States, but did not specify under what circumstances, amid ongoing tensions regarding his government’s judicial reform program.
The White House has also not provided clear details about the planned meeting so far, and there have been speculations that it could take place at the United Nations on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, as Biden seems reluctant to grant the Israeli leader the honor of sitting in the White House.
In response to a question about his government's divisive efforts to limit the judiciary's powers, Netanyahu says he is bringing Israel in line with what is common among all democracies, stating that the balance between the branches of government has been thrown off track in Israel over the past 20 years because we have the most active judiciary on the planet.
He adds, "I want to bring the pendulum to the center; I do not want to bring the pendulum to the other side."
As for the recently passed law to prevent courts from overturning ministerial decisions or decisions by ministers on the grounds of being unreasonable, Netanyahu describes it as a minor correction to the judiciary.
He points out that describing the passing of the law as the end of Israeli democracy is ridiculous, and that when the situation calms down, everyone will see that.
