Government ministers will continue to testify today before the Public Order Emergency Commission, which has already heard from more than 65 witnesses over five weeks about the federal government’s response to the "Freedom Convoy" protests last winter.
The inquiry is also scrutinizing the events and advice that led to the mid-February decision to invoke the Emergencies Act, which came after nearly three weeks of protests that took over downtown Ottawa and closed border crossings.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, attending today, is likely to face questions about his earlier suggestion this year that police requested the Emergencies Act, when they later denied doing so. He may also be asked about an email sent by RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki to his office the day before the government invoked the Emergencies Act, which indicated that police might not need the extraordinary powers of the law.
Also expected to testify later today is Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc, who manages the file of federal-provincial relations, and he may be asked to respond to Prairies provinces’ concerns about insufficient consultation on federal plans.
Additionally, more ministers are expected to appear before the commission throughout the week, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may testify on Friday.
