"CH4" methane, known as methane, is the second gas responsible for the greenhouse effect. Its emissions are less than carbon dioxide but much more dangerous. Its concentration in the atmosphere has currently reached its highest levels. Also, methane emissions achieved an "unprecedented jump" in 2021, reaching a record level, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in a report published on Wednesday, October 26. Also, according to the organization's Secretary-General Petteri Taalas, the figures "once again confirm the huge challenge and urgent need to take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit future temperature rises globally." In fact, the increase in methane emissions is not a good sign because it is a super-polluting gas alone responsible for 30% of the warming the Earth suffers from.Although carbon dioxide gas accounts for about two-thirds of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the methane problem "remains at least as important as carbon dioxide," according to Ewan Nisbet, a researcher at Royal Holloway, University of London, and one of the leading specialists in the impact of methane gas on climate. This gas has properties that make it a source of concern much greater than carbon dioxide, as researcher Ewan Nisbet confirms: "When comparing its molecules to those in carbon dioxide, we conclude that methane is much more harmful than carbon dioxide," adding: "Because one molecule of methane traps more heat than carbon dioxide by about 80 times over twenty years." Furthermore, for the World Meteorological Organization, the reason for this exceptional increase in methane levels compared to 2020 "is unclear, but it seems to be caused by both biological and human activities."
