A South Korean study warned of the danger of disturbing the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, even at low levels that can be controlled with medication, but may eventually lead to a heart attack.

And high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood may lead to heart attacks and strokes, which is medically recognized, but the study conducted by government health centers in South Korea, indicates that also low levels of bad cholesterol may lead to cardiovascular diseases if not controlled medically.

According to the researchers, low-density bad cholesterol, medically called "lipoprotein cholesterol," may be very harmful as it deposits inside the walls of arteries, leading to obstruction of blood flow.

Doctors believe that the results of this study should not change the standards of routine tests for cholesterol screening, nor the treatment plan through the medications taken to control it.

But in the case of varying levels of lipoprotein cholesterol, a special medication should be taken for it.

Many factors cause an increase in bad cholesterol, including consuming large amounts of saturated fat foods, fast food, in addition to lack of activity and weight gain.

In the same context, interventional cardiology consultant Dr. Mohammed Andron said: “This study is out of the ordinary, because we know that bad cholesterol leads to artery blockage and heart attacks, but this study focuses on very low cholesterol levels, noting that they are associated with an increase in heart disease mortality rates.”

He continued: “People who have cholesterol deficiency also suffer from other diseases that may lead to death.”

Andron also pointed out that “it is well-known that people who take the famous cholesterol medication (statins) have a lower risk of death regarding heart diseases and strokes.”
