Meta announced that it is officially moving to remove news from its platforms Facebook and Instagram for users in Canada, stating that the removal process of news for all Canadian users will take place over the coming weeks.
Meta had previously been conducting a test limiting news to up to five percent of its users, and it now says it is exiting the testing phase.
This means that links to news articles and other content published by Canadian publishers and broadcasters will not be viewable to people accessing social media platforms in Canada.
The company indicated that it identifies such content based on how it is defined in the online news law of the Liberal government, which became law earlier this summer.
The company added that the move to block news is a response to the bill, which requires tech giants to enter agreements to compensate Canadian news outlets for content shared or otherwise redirected on their platforms.
