A man from Ontario, convicted of killing a mother and two children in a car collision accident in 2018, was sentenced to six years in prison. The accident occurred on August 4 at around 9 p.m. on Highway 50 near Countryside Drive in Brampton, Ontario. Police at the time said that the collision between a sports car and an SUV resulted in the death of a 47-year-old woman, a 12-year-old girl, and a seven-year-old boy.
During the trial, the court heard that the sports car driver - known as Paul Manzon - was driving over the speed limit when he was driving his car through the intersection. Also, in addition to the six-year prison sentence, Manzon will also face a seven-year driving ban after his release.
Judge Nancy Denison stated in her reasons, "The lives lost are worth far more than can be explained by any criminal sentence." There were 85 witness statements, which led to the sentencing decision. She also took into account Manzon's background and circumstances, saying she reached the decision that "a long prison sentence is justified." Denison explained that Manzon showed remorse and that he is the caregiver for his father. The Supreme Court judge added that Manzon has a criminal record for drug possession from 1991 and two impaired driving convictions for which he was fined, but there were no convictions for any highway traffic offenses.
After a request for a 10 to 12-year prison sentence with a five-year driving ban thereafter, the defense sought a five-year sentence with a 10-year driving ban. Additionally, Denison said, "I hope the [family] understands the reason for the sentence I imposed. The sentence is not intended to crush Mr. Manzon." She described the consequences of his actions as "catastrophic," adding that we will never know what the two children killed in the accident could have done.
