About 26 people filed a lawsuit against the Thermea resort in Whitby, Ontario, accusing the resort of causing them to contract a staphylococcal infection from one of the saltwater pools at the spa. The spa had opened on October 6 of this year, about 5 years after it was announced, and had also received a warning from Public Health in Durham, drawing attention to a potential health risk discovered in the Kala pool water. Additionally, it stated that the resort took immediate action to close its facilities and formed a full team to conduct a special investigation regarding this matter. Staphylococcus bacteria reside on the skin and nose and are usually harmless, but they can enter the body through wounds or abrasions that may be nearly invisible. Once inside the body, the bacteria can spread to several organs and systems, including the heart, where the toxins produced by the bacteria may cause a heart attack.
