Israeli reports mentioned on Wednesday evening that Saudi Arabia will announce during this week, coinciding with the visit of US President Joe Biden, the opening of its airspace to Israeli flights, while American officials emphasized that "the secret cooperation between Riyadh and Tel Aviv has increased significantly" recently.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation ("Kan 11") quoted officials familiar with the US president's visit as saying that expectations indicate that Saudi Arabia will allow all commercial flights to and from Israel to fly over its airspace this week.
The channel mentioned that the anticipated announcement will include allowing Muslims from Palestinian 48 to travel directly on charter flights from Ben Gurion Airport in Lod to Jeddah Airport in Saudi Arabia, to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
Meanwhile, officials in the Biden administration, speaking to the official Israeli channel, said that "full normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel is not close yet, although secret cooperation between the two countries has certainly expanded in recent times."
For its part, Israeli Channel 12, citing sources familiar with the details of Biden's visit, said that expectations lean towards Saudi Arabia officially announcing during this week that it will allow all flights from Israel to fly in its airspace.
The channel also reported that "Saudi Arabia will allow Muslim citizens in Israel to travel directly from Ben Gurion Airport to Saudi Arabia to participate in the Hajj season."
Israel seeks to exploit Biden's visit to push for arms deals with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, including a deal to sell air defense systems.
"Kan 11" mentioned that the commander of the US Central Command "CENTCOM," Eric Kurilla, will visit Israel next week and will meet with senior officials of the Israeli army.
According to the channel, Kurilla will discuss with the Israeli army leadership the possibility of expanding regional defense cooperation against Iranian missiles and drones, in addition to expanding cooperation with other countries in the region under American sponsorship.
