U.S. President Joe Biden pledged on Monday to provide Ukraine with advanced air defense systems, following Russian missile attacks targeting the capital Kyiv and many other cities, according to the White House.
The U.S. presidency said in a statement that Biden spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, and "pledged to continue providing Ukraine with the necessary support to defend itself, including advanced air defense systems."
Biden expressed his condemnation of the Russian missile attacks across Ukraine, including Kyiv, and "offered his condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured in these senseless attacks."
Biden emphasized, according to the statement, his "ongoing engagement with allies and partners to continue imposing costs on Russia, holding Russia accountable for war crimes and atrocities, and providing Ukraine with security, economic, and humanitarian assistance."
On Monday, the United Nations General Assembly in New York held an emergency session to discuss a draft resolution condemning Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
This session comes just hours after a Russian missile attack targeted Kyiv and many other Ukrainian cities, which was condemned by the United Nations and the West.
While General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, the West hopes that through this draft resolution, possibly put to a vote on Wednesday, to demonstrate Moscow's isolation on the international stage.
Kyiv and many other Ukrainian cities were subjected on Monday morning to an unprecedented Russian bombardment in terms of severity, coming two days after an explosion that partially destroyed the Russian Crimea bridge.
