Two South Simcoe police officers were killed after a shooting at an Innisfil residence in Ontario. In a statement released early Wednesday morning, South Simcoe police reported that the two officers responded to a disturbance call at a home on 25 Sideroad and 9 around 8 p.m. Tuesday night, where they say both officers were shot inside the home after going directly there to check on the matter. One officer was transferred to the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, where he died of his injuries. The second officer was airlifted to the Toronto Trauma Centre and was in critical condition, but the police later confirmed that the officer died early Wednesday morning. The suspect was also pronounced dead shortly after an encounter with police during a raid to arrest him.
In the same context, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the province took jurisdiction due to the nature of the deaths, as the Special Investigations Unit is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that may have resulted in death, as well as serious injuries, sexual assaults, shootings, and even weapon discharges. Also, South Simcoe police stated that they are “shattered” by the loss of their officers, considering it a great loss for all of Ontario, and they extended condolences to the families of the victims. York Regional Police are currently assisting South Simcoe police in actively investigating to gather information about the incident and determine the main cause that led to it.
