Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, carried a sign showing the phone number of the office of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during the United Nations General Assembly meeting on Tuesday.

Erdan, holding up a sign depicting Sinwar's office phone number, said in response to members of the United Nations General Assembly who directly asked him about a ceasefire, "Do you want a real ceasefire?", they talked to him because he is the terrorist mastermind and he and Hamas bear the real responsibility for the current conflict, not Israel.

He continued, "Call… and ask for Yahya Sinwar, ask Hamas to lay down their arms, surrender themselves, and return our hostages, this will lead to a complete ceasefire that will last forever.”

The United Nations General Assembly called for a ceasefire in Gaza with a majority of 153 votes against 10, with 23 countries abstaining after hours of US President Joe Biden warning Israel that it is losing international support for its campaign to overthrow Hamas.

The resolution, the second of its kind since the war began on October 7, was met with applause.

The United States and Israel opposed this measure, as did Austria, the Czech Republic, Guatemala, Liberia, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay.

The UN Security Council had already met over the weekend at the request of the organization's Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to discuss the war in the Gaza Strip, and a resolution calling for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons was voted on during the same discussion after the United States used its veto against the proposal. About 97 UN member states voted in favor of an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons.
