The Liberals have unveiled their long-awaited strategy in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, announcing increased military spending and strengthening relations with countries like India.

The strategy revealed in Vancouver allocates $2.3 billion for Canada to build closer ties with countries ranging from Pakistan to Japan, including some funding announced by the Liberals in recent weeks.

The new announcements include nearly half a billion dollars to deploy more naval frigates in areas such as the South China Sea and conduct military exercises with countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Canada will also increase its capacity to process visas to improve a system that suffers from delays. This comes on top of recently announced plans to strengthen close trade relations with Southeast Asian countries as a balancing power against China's influence, including through funding infrastructure projects in developing countries.

Additionally, Ottawa will send 200 experts to offer advice to countries wishing to work with Canada on everything from governance to ocean management.
