More trains will be operated along the Confederation Line during peak periods in the morning and afternoon today, Monday, including some double-decker trains, to maintain passenger flow along the O-Train line.
There has been an increase in the number of passengers on the O-Train Line 1 after Labor Day with students returning to university, college, and high schools, and more employees returning to their offices, while some passengers have complained about overcrowded trains and platforms.
The General Manager of Transit Services, Renee Amilcar, says that OC Transpo is responding to increases in customer volumes during peak periods on weekdays.
As of today, the number of trains operating during peak periods will rise from 13 to 17, with some of those trains operating as double-decker cars.
Amilcar said, "OC Transpo expects that service frequency will provide adequate capacity for customers, and the operations team will continue to monitor service closely and adjust as necessary."
The company states that trains will operate approximately every four minutes during peak hours in the morning and afternoon on weekdays.
Transit services launched a single-car service in August, resuming service after a 28-day maintenance shutdown, where Amilcar stated there is enough capacity to meet demand. The new maintenance requirements for OC Transpo state that all front axles and wheel axles in light rail vehicles must be replaced every 60,000 kilometers.
While more trains will be operated along the Confederation Line this week, there will be fewer shuttle buses on the roads.
OC Transpo will no longer operate the western Shuttle Express train between Tunney's Pasture Station and downtown Ottawa during peak periods.
Amilcar said, "The number of passengers between Tunney's Pasture Station and downtown is much lower, with around five to ten customers on each trip."
The eastern rapid transit train between Blair Station and downtown Ottawa will continue to operate, with buses every 10 minutes during peak hours in the morning and afternoon on weekdays.
