If you've ever wondered about Justin Trudeau's salary, here are the details of the amount of money he earns as the Prime Minister of Canada, where a new survey by Research Co, released in March 2023, found that 1 in 5 Canadians already know the Prime Minister's annual salary.
The majority of people, 42% of them, believed that Trudeau earns less than $301,000 every year, and 24% thought he earns more than $400,000 annually.
Only 18% of the Canadians surveyed were able to correctly say that Trudeau's salary ranges between $301,000 and $400,000.
When participants were told that the Prime Minister of Canada receives an annual salary of $379,000, 41% of them said this is too much.
Meanwhile, Members of Parliament, also known as MPs, receive a basic salary of $189,500 paid monthly.
Additionally, members who hold certain positions receive extra payments, including the Prime Minister, government ministers, leaders of opposition parties, and more, according to the House of Commons.
The Canadian Parliament publishes the salaries and benefits of Senate and House of Commons employees such as the Prime Minister every year so Canadians can know what public employees earn.
In addition to the MP salary, Trudeau also receives an additional annual salary of $189,500 paid monthly, plus a car allowance of $2,000 for being the Prime Minister of Canada.
This means he earns $379,000 annually without the car allowance and $381,000 with it. By comparison, the leader of the opposition and ministers in the House of Commons receive an additional salary of $90,400, while other party leaders receive $64,100 on top of the MP salary.
Also, according to data from Statistics Canada, the average weekly wages for full-time and part-time employees were $1,212.58 in February 2023.
It is noted that the average salary in Canada is $63,054.16 if a person works for 52 weeks in a year.
Therefore, Trudeau's combined income from being a member of parliament and prime minister is six times the average salary in Canada.
Recently, Indeed reported that the top industries in Canada with the highest average annual salaries are mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction, utilities, finance and insurance, professional, scientific and technical services, and public administration.
