The jury selection process for Nathaniel Viltman’s trial at the Ontario Superior Court in Windsor was completed yesterday.
The 22-year-old man is accused of first-degree murder of four members of the Afzaal family in 2021 in London, Ontario, as well as attempted murder and participating in terrorist activity.
Judge Renee Pomerance wanted to ensure that a sufficient number of jurors would be able to participate in the entire trial.
Therefore, the Supreme Court judge oversaw the selection of 16 jurors, which is two more than typically selected.
The jury currently consists of eight men and eight women.
The judge also estimated that the risk of one or more jurors needing to leave is higher than usual, especially since the trial is expected to last three months.
If all selected jurors can attend the start of the prosecution's presentation of evidence next Monday, two of them will be dismissed.
At that point, a jury of 14 will participate in the entire trial, but only 12 will be involved in deliberations.
It is noted that the accused, Nathaniel Viltman, was arrested hours after the truck attack he carried out on June 6, 2021, in London that resulted in the deaths of four individuals from the Pakistani-origin Afzaal family and injured nine-year-old Fayez Afzaal.
He was the only surviving child from the attack that claimed the lives of his father Salman (46), mother Madiha (44), sister Yumna (15), and paternal grandmother Talat (74).
Nathaniel Viltman defended himself on Tuesday, stating that he is not guilty of the four counts of first-degree murder and the attempted murder charge against him.
The prosecution will attempt to prove that the attack was an act of terrorism.
