In a bizarre incident, a British man was imprisoned for withdrawing tens of thousands of pounds from his father's bank accounts by impersonating his voice and that of his deceased mother during phone calls with bank staff.
A comprehensive and complex police investigation that lasted for 14 months during 2017 and 2018, shortly after his mother's death, revealed that "Daniel Cuthbert," 42, stole over £56,000 ($70,000) from his father by contacting his parents' bank and impersonating both his father and his late mother.
According to audio recordings, "Cuthbert" forged his deceased mother's name during at least 9 calls and correctly answered security questions posed by the bank staff.
According to prosecutors, Daniel Cuthbert's father noticed suspicious activity while checking his bank account, but he was convinced that his son had nothing to do with it. Nevertheless, the poor man soon learned that trusting his son was a very bad decision.
In 2018, a construction company contacted "Daniel's" father to inform him that he would lose his house due to non-payment, as his son had taken several loans in his name and did not bother to repay them, or at least inform his father about them.
Faced with audio evidence confirming his crime, "Daniel" admitted to fraud through "false representation" and was recently sentenced to two years in prison by a judge at Preston Crown Court.
