A report by the Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" stated on Saturday that Hamas militants did not know in advance about the party in which 367 people were killed near Re'im in the Gaza Envelope, but they acted spontaneously.
According to the Israeli newspaper, a source in the police indicated that an Israeli army helicopter arrived at the scene of the incident and opened fire on Hamas fighters, and it seems that it also hit some of the audience and participants in the party.
The newspaper added, based on estimates by senior security officials, that Hamas discovered the party through drones or umbrellas, and the movement's fighters headed to the place using their communication system.
"Haaretz" explained that a video clip from one of the cameras belonging to Hamas fighters showed a voice asking an Israeli prisoner for directions to Re'im.
The newspaper indicated that one of the outcomes reinforcing this assessment, according to the police and other senior security figures, is that "a Hamas terrorist" arrived at the site from Road 232, and not from the direction of the border with Gaza.
In addition, according to police sources, the party was originally scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday, with an additional day on Saturday, which was revealed on Tuesday of that week, at the request of the organizers.
The last-minute change, according to "Haaretz," reinforces the assessment that Hamas was not aware of the party’s timing at all.
The newspaper quoted a senior Israeli police source as saying: "According to our estimates, about 4,400 people attended this event. The vast majority of them managed to escape after the decision to disperse the crowd was made four minutes after the missile attack."
Police analysis, according to "Haaretz," shows that many attendees at the festival were able to flee because it was decided to stop the party half an hour before gunfire was heard for the first time.
