Greek Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias reported that Greek authorities have detained 117 people this year in connection with the outbreak of fires, confirming the possibility of increasing fines one hundredfold.
Kikilias said in an interview with "Skai" channel: "Since July 1st, we have recorded 1470 fires... Since the beginning of 2023, 117 people have been arrested in relation to incidents, including 107 for negligence and 10 for arson."
In response to a journalist's question about the possibility of increasing the fine for causing a fire through negligence to 30,000 euros, the minister replied, "Fines will multiply several times and reach the level of fines for animal abuse."
He explained: "They will multiply by 10, 20, and one hundred times, if necessary... The fines against those few who have tortured animals have been a successful measure... We must protect many from the few who endanger our lives, our property, and our environment."
He also mentioned the possibility of using satellites to monitor emergency conditions in real-time.
