No Canadian injuries or missing persons have been reported following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the west coast of Japan's main island on Monday, according to Global Affairs Canada.
Global Affairs spokesperson Pierre Cojean said in an email to CTV News on Monday: "So far, we have no reports of any Canadian citizens affected, and we have not received any calls or emails from concerned Canadian citizens," "Canadian consular officials are ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens as needed."
The earthquake was one of more than a dozen quakes to hit the island nation just after 4 p.m. local time, causing buildings to collapse on the west coast of Honshu, Japan's main island, and triggering the country's highest tsunami warning level.
The Associated Press reported that at least six homes were damaged due to the earthquakes, trapping people inside, and a fire broke out in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued several tsunami warnings following the earthquakes, including a major alert for Ishikawa, but quickly lowered its most severe warning level. The Japanese government has not reported any fatalities, but power was cut to 30,000 homes in the hours following the two earthquakes.
Cojean said, "On behalf of all Canadians, we express our sympathy to all those affected and wish a speedy recovery to the injured."
