The Canadian Deputy Prime Minister said that the finding that some members of the Canadian Parliament were "deliberately" aiding foreign actors is "concerning," but she trusts that law enforcement will carry out its duties.
Christia Freeland's comments come after a committee of MPs and senators released a report on Monday stating that intelligence shows foreign actors worked to enhance relations with parliamentarians.
The committee members were granted high-level security clearance to review the information and ultimately concluded that Canada’s response to foreign interference was lacking.
The report highlighted what it described as "particularly concerning" actions taken by a "few" unnamed politicians, which it added could be illegal.
Freeland says that the findings reached by the committee today are "concerning," adding that they "should be."
She defends the government's handling of foreign interference, stating that the federal Liberals take this issue seriously.
