Toronto police confirmed the news that it is investigating the former president of the largest private sector union in Canada after the union handed over money that he was said to have accepted from a supplier of COVID-19 rapid test kits that he promoted to members.
The union said Dias is accused of violating the union's code of ethics and democratic practices constitution. A hearing will be held before the National Executive Council as early as this month.
Dias has been at the head of the union since 2013 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2019. He had a reputation for being outspoken, pessimistic, and willing to push everyone from major companies to politicians to work in the best interests of workers. He was a key figure during negotiations of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, successfully encouraged General Motors Canada to reopen the Oshawa plant, invest up to $1.3 billion, and employ up to 1,700 workers after it had planned to close the facility.
Police spokesperson Laura Brabant also confirmed on Tuesday that the financial crimes unit has launched an investigation. She said in an email to the Canadian Press: "The investigation is in its early stages, and we will not comment on details at this time in order to protect the investigation."
