Firefighters are battling a fire from four alarms this morning, Sunday, at a historic church in the west end of Toronto.

Toronto Fire said crews received a report of a fire inside St. Anne's Anglican Church on Gladstone Avenue near Dundas Street West shortly before 8 a.m.

Toronto Fire explained that neighboring properties were evacuated "as a precaution," adding that the main body of the fire was extinguished by 9:55 a.m., with crews continuing to extinguish hot spots.

They said earlier Sunday morning that water towers and crews were prepared for external firefighting operations.

Police reported receiving calls about shattered windows and thick smoke rising from the building.

They added that there were no reports of injuries.

Gladstone Avenue is closed between College and Dundas Streets as crews work to bring the fire under control. Police advised drivers and pedestrians to use alternative routes.

The Sunday service at the church located in Little Portugal was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., according to its website.

St. Anne's Anglican Church, built in 1907-1908, was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1996. In 1980, the City of Toronto also designated the church under the Ontario Heritage Act.

According to the Ontario Heritage Trust website: "The design of the church in the Byzantine style is unusual for an Anglican church."

"St. Anne's Church was built of concrete and brick and features a cruciform design with a distinctive central dome that rises 21 meters [70 feet]."

Organizers of the Do West Fest, a street festival in Little Portugal stretching from Ossington Avenue to Lansdowne Avenue along Dundas Street W., said its start has been delayed on Sunday due to the fire at St. Anne's, just steps away from the festival.

The festival was originally set to begin at 11 a.m., and a new start time has not yet been announced.
