News reports indicated that General Motors, the largest car manufacturer in the United States, was fined $145.8 million due to excessive carbon emissions from approximately 5.9 million of its light trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) during the period from 2012 to 2018.

This fine came after an investigation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency discovered that the affected vehicles were emitting exhaust during the period from 2012 to 2018 at levels 10% higher than what the company committed to in its documents.

The U.S. agency stated that the company agreed to forfeit approximately 50 million metric tons of its carbon emissions allowances.

General Motors commented on the penalty, saying, "We have complied and adhered at all times to all the laws and regulations in place regarding the certification and testing of the affected vehicles... This is the best course of action to decisively resolve the ongoing issues with the federal government regarding this matter."
