The Canadian federal government announced a delay in its previously stated plan to expand eligibility for medical assistance in dying; this includes individuals with mental illness until 2027.
Health Minister Mark Holland pointed out in this regard that he has introduced legislation to postpone this decision until the completion of the next federal elections in 2025.
Holland and Justice Minister "Arif Virani" also stated their agreement regarding the conclusion reached by a parliamentary committee indicating that Canada is not currently ready for this.
The provinces and territories also called on the federal government to stop expanding in this regard indefinitely.
Also, the Conservative Party demanded that the federal government permanently cancel the expansion.
