Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his readiness to leave office "in a democratic manner" if he loses the presidential election scheduled to take place in Turkey on May 14.
Erdoğan said in a statement to the Turkish media on Friday: "We came to power in Turkey through democratic means. And just as we came to power, we will do whatever is necessary for democracy if the people decide so."
He added: "We will consider any election result legitimate."
This came two days before the presidential election in Turkey, where a fierce confrontation is expected between the current president Erdoğan and the opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, noting that public opinion polls show a close level of support for the candidates.
