Two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting incident in Ottawa on Saturday (September 2). City Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, while expressing his shock and condolences, stated that this is another example of the need for more police to combat gun crimes.
The shooting occurred during a wedding in the southern suburbs of Ottawa, with police receiving a call after 10 PM on Saturday, where the victims were two young men from Toronto.
They are the eleventh and twelfth individuals to die in homicides in the city of Ottawa this year. So far, police have made no arrests and have been unable to determine whether the shooting was a gang-related fight or a hate crime.
Ottawa's crime severity index for 2022 is below the national average, with only five urban areas out of 35 in the country having an index lower than Ottawa's. Sutcliffe stated that Ottawa is still a very safe city, but Saturday's incident, although just one, was extremely serious.
The Ottawa Police Service has also prepared a budget report for 2024. The police said that the results of public consultations and surveys show that the majority of citizens want more police.
