Some wrong habits during the month of Ramadan cause an increased risk of kidney stones and urinary tract problems, and abstaining from drinking sufficient amounts of water complicates the condition of those affected by this disease, which raises many repeated questions about what a kidney patient should do when they stop drinking water throughout the day in Ramadan? And what are the tips to follow for a safe fasting Ramadan? And when does the health condition require a permit to break the fast?

What are the causes of kidney stone formation?

Dr. Dawood Kashmoula, a consultant in urological surgery, explained that stones form in the kidneys due to a disturbance in the levels of fluids, salts, minerals, and some other compounds in the urine, and not consuming enough fluids is the main cause of this disease. Some people are more prone to develop stones in the kidneys than others, which may be due to genetic factors if a family member has had it.

What are the cases that necessitate not fasting?

Kidney stone patients are advised not to fast during Ramadan if they suffer from one of the following conditions:

Obstruction of the ureter due to the stone.

Severe symptoms such as renal colic.

Suffering from infections of the ureter, bladder, or urinary tract.

Unstable stones.

What are the necessary tips to ensure safe fasting?

Dr. Dawood Kashmoula confirmed that kidney stone patients can fast during Ramadan after consulting a doctor to assess potential risks, with the necessity of adhering to some important advice such as:

Drink large amounts of water and fluids between Iftar and Suhoor, about 2 to 2.5 liters.

Avoid eating a lot of salty foods and concentrated sugars during Iftar because they generate thirst during the day.

Avoid exerting physical effort during the fasting period to prevent sweating and maintain bodily fluids.

Consume green salad rich in vitamins and minerals at Iftar and Suhoor, as it contains the necessary water to compensate the body for lost fluids.
