The police said that four people were killed by a person who appeared to be randomly shooting at people over a period of nearly two and a half hours on Sunday morning in Detroit.

The police were searching for a suspect on Sunday afternoon with the help of the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

For his part, Detroit Police Chief James White warned residents to be cautious and to call 911 if they know the identity or whereabouts of the suspect.

White said: "What we want to do today is get him off the street."

Explaining, "The police tracked all four shootings and found that they came from one firearm and believe there is one shooter."

He said investigators do not believe there is any connection between the victims, noting that one person was walking with a dog and another was waiting for a bus when they were shot.

Adding, the police discovered a woman in her forties who was shot several times around 4:45 am on Sunday.

White said that while officers were investigating the fatal shooting, a witness reported that a 28-year-old man was shot multiple times nearby.

The police said a third victim, a woman in her forties, was found in the area around 6:50 am and died after being shot several times.

At about 7:10 am, an elderly man said he saw a man staring at vehicles.

The police said that when the elderly man asked the person to stay away from the cars, the gunman shot the elderly man who was hit by one bullet and survived.
