A number of drivers in Calgary sustained significant damage to their vehicles due to falling snow and ice from the snowplows that work to clear the roads and overpasses. One prominent incident occurred on Deerfoot Trail under the overpass of Stoney Trail, where large amounts of snow and ice fell onto vehicles passing below the bridge.
Amanda Westby, one of the affected drivers, spoke about her harrowing experience, describing how the incident happened suddenly without warning, making her unable to avoid the damage. Fortunately, her vehicle's camera captured the incident, but she confirmed that the damages to her car are estimated to be in the thousands of dollars. She noted the psychological impact of the incident, as she now feels anxious and fearful every time she approaches the same spot on the road.
For its part, the City of Calgary confirmed that it is aware of the risks associated with snow removal operations and is working to review procedures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Authorities also encouraged affected drivers to file claims for compensation for the damages caused by the city's operations.
This incident highlights the challenges associated with road maintenance in the winter, as well as the risks that may arise from falling snow and ice, especially from elevated roads and bridges.
