A fire in southeast Calgary caused damage to four homes on Thursday, including two homes that were nearly destroyed.

The Calgary Fire Department received the first call about the fire that broke out on Cranfield Crescent S.E at 6:45 PM.

Crews that arrived noticed a large amount of smoke and flames blazing at the scene and called for assistance for a second fire alarm.

Firefighters say the home believed to be where the fire started, as well as a neighboring home, suffered severe damage. Two other homes only sustained exterior damage.

Meanwhile, the chief of the Calgary Fire Battalion, who was at the scene, said that neighbors and firefighters in Calgary went from house to house in the area to evacuate 10 homes.

Three people were transported to the Southern Health Center for smoke inhalation treatment. A fourth person at the scene was examined due to multiple injuries.

There have been no reports yet on the cause of the fire.

Nearby residents say the fire attracted a large crowd of residents.

Meanwhile, Irene Thorpe, who lives nearby, said: "The fire was a reminder to appreciate the small things and maintain necessary safety precautions."

Police at the scene were managing traffic. Roads leading to the area were closed.
