In last June, the Greater Sudbury Police added a mobile crisis rapid response team to handle an increasing number of mental health calls and it is now being expanded.
The new pilot project pairs a specialized mental health nurse with a police officer to provide the help people need. Consequently, the new team will take on intervention in such cases with its staff and equipment and act professionally with the various conditions and situations that may be encountered. Sergeant Matt Hall said, "The Health Sciences North group is capable of being a better tool for intervention in regular and critical cases."
The new team started on May 1. A clinical director at HSN said: "It's good to have a specialized team that can manage these calls while reducing the impact on the individual who receives calls about crimes, violations, and problems in general."
Sudbury Police said in March 2022 that there were 90 mental health calls. Among the individuals involved, 55 percent had previous contact with the police in the past thirty days."
With this new team dedicated to working within the community, they can go out and do proactive things. Check on these individuals, review their performance, ensure they keep up with their appointments and medications, and make any referrals that require intervention. While the project is temporary, officials hope it becomes permanent.
