Carbon pricing... Conservatives threaten to paralyze parliamentary committees

The Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre threatened the Liberals with paralyzing parliamentary committees and the House of Commons to the extent that it may delay the start of the holiday if they do not provide new relief for carbon pricing.

On Wednesday, he announced during a speech he gave before his party gathering saying: "We demand the government cancel carbon taxes on farmers, First Nations, and families, or we will put thousands of amendments in the committees and in the House of Commons."

During this meeting, which journalists are usually not invited to, Poilievre confirmed that this parliamentary obstruction will generate voices that will last for 24 hours.

He also added that this is his message to [Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau and the Bloc, whom he blames for causing the misery, tension, and tremendous suffering of Canadians.

He laughed saying: "They will have a little tension too." He even pledged in English to spoil Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's birthday.

For the Liberals, the Conservative leader’s position is irresponsible and resembles intimidation, which is unbecoming of a leader.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House, Karina Gould, was angry that Poilievre’s forces submitted nearly 20,000 amendments to Bill C-50 on Sustainable Jobs in the Standing Committee on Natural Resources on Tuesday.

She said: "The bill consists of only 11 pages. What does he want to amend? He wants to amend the title 500 times. This is irresponsible. This shows that politics for him is a game, not a serious matter. He wants to 'dominate' Canadians."

Obstruction attempts have already been observed in many parliamentary committees. For example, last month a Conservative Member of Parliament announced before the Standing Committee on Official Languages that she would submit a proposal to study the impact of carbon pricing on both French and English languages in the country.

The Conservatives have paralyzed the Standing Committee on Natural Resources since October 30.

Also, Poilievre repeated on Wednesday that if Canadian farmers pay a tax and truck drivers pay taxes, all the food items purchased by Quebec residents that are transported from other parts of Canada are subject to tax under the carbon tax imposed by Justin Trudeau.

The Conservatives also consider that the Bloc supports the regulations related to clean fuel, which they associate with a second tax that will lead to a 17-cent increase per liter of gasoline by 2030, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, as they rely on the House of Commons vote in June.
