Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that hosting a friendly match between Canada and Iran next month in Vancouver is unwise.

Trudeau said on Tuesday in St. John's, when asked about the match: "That was a choice made by Canada Soccer."

"I think it was not a very good idea to invite the Iranian football team here to Canada. But that is something the organizers will have to explain."

During the press conference with the Prime Minister, a reporter raised the issue of families who lost loved ones on Ukraine International Airlines flight 752, which was shot down after taking off from Tehran by an Iranian surface-to-air missile on January 8, 2020.

The Canadian government says that 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents were among the 176 people killed.

The federal government said that Canada's priority "is to seek answers and pursue justice by holding Iran accountable and seeking compensation, while continuing to provide the victims' families and loved ones with the support they need."
