The Canadian grocery store chain "Metro" is getting rid of single-use plastic bags this year.
The Quebec-based company announced this week that all stores will stop providing plastic bags starting in September at locations in Sault Ste. Marie - Ontario.
Stores in Sault will stop providing plastic bags starting June 6. This comes after Walmart stores stopped providing plastic bags earlier this year.
Jonathan Schmelt, Walmart manager in Sault Ste. Marie - Ontario, told CTV News that the transition from single-use plastic bags to reusable bags was a relatively smooth transition.
Schmelt said, "Our customers are looking for an environmental change like us." "I think, for the most part, the feedback has been very positive so far from customers.
There will always be a bit of a learning curve that comes with anything like this, but for the most part, most customers bring their own grocery bags."
David Saint George from the Sudbury-based environmental group Rethink Green told CTV News that the ban on single-use plastic by two retail giants like Walmart and Metro is a significant environmental shift.
"So, if a family gets five plastic bags every two weeks, times that over a year, or multiplied by the hundreds of families that pass through these stores every day, that is a huge amount of plastic than we already think."
George said while some Walmart customers had a harder time adjusting than others, one shopper spoke with CTV News in Sault Ste.
Mary said the change is necessary. "I have seen plastic bags in the oceans and seas and lakes and rivers polluting everything, so I think it's a great idea, it's simple, it's an easy transition."
